Tumeric (Curcuma longa) is brought to us from India, but is certainly a staple in Western herbal medicine and kitchen cabinets around the world. Tumeric is strongly antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, and has broad immune-enhancing activities. While we don’t fully understand its mechanism of action, we do know that Tumeric’s anti-inflammatory action is partly explained by its ability to act as a dual inhibitor of AA metabolism. Several trials have shown that people with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and post-operative pain experienced significant symptom improvement when using turmeric preparations.
Turmeric has wide medicinal applications, and in addition to its ability to act as a powerful anti-inflammatory, it is well-known as a detoxifying remedy, and as a strong liver tonic. Tumeric has beneficial uses in the digestive system, is a herb that can help normalize cholesterol, and has been the subject of many studies due to its anti-cancer properties.
Zingiber officinalis (Ginger root) is a well-loved, universally used herb in the kitchen and herbal medicine cabinets alike. Most commonly used as a warming, digestive herb, it is popular for its ability to help reduce nausea. It is well-known as a circulatory tonic, and for its powerful anti-inflammatory actions, which are due to its ability to act as a dual inhibitor of AA metabolism. There are trials that show its value as part of treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
